She had inherited it from our aunt, who passed away a number of years ago. Once I got it, it was always my intention to weave something in order to re-upholster the top.

Ten years later, having moved into a new house with Mr. Penney (there’s a sale at Penney’s!) it was apparent that I was not going to get around to weaving the fabric for the chest with all of the other projects that I have going on. So I set out to buy some fabric to re-upholster the top. The third fabric that I brought home is the one that we went with. I purchased the fabric at Calico Corners, as it was 50%, and I have a thing for tweeds. I used less than a yard of fabric for this project.

The upholstery job is not bad for a first try, I think, though I don’t believe anyone is going to hire me to do it for them just yet. I used 2″ thick foam that I purchased from JoAnn’s and a Black and Decker Cobra stapler that I borrowed from my dad. I did manage to line up the fabric well, but the edges are a bit bumpy, indicating each place the fabric was stretched and stapled. Nonetheless, it was a quick and easy makeover for the piece, and goes better with the rest of what is in the bedroom.

I received this cedar chest from my sister when I moved into my first house.
